On Aging Well: A Clinicians’ View
Aging well: What’s the secret sauce?
Being a clinician means having a front-row seat to the changing seasons of my client’s lives. Together, we have grieved functional losses, and celebrated clinical wins. Witnessing the broad spectrum of aging comes with the job-but begs the question: What is the secret sauce?
Why do two people of the same age move through life with such wildly different degrees of joy, mobility, and energy? What are the common habits and traits of those who age vibrantly? What can they teach us about true vitality?
While aging (and life) is complicated, those who do it well share some commonalities. This isn't an exhaustive list-just a few habits of people who embrace their trips around the sun better than most:
Connection is good for the soul.
⭐ MOVE DAILY. Intentionally. It doesn’t need to be crazy routine Walk. A lot. Challenge balance with functional movement. Lift if possible. The rule is simple: if you rest, you rust. Those who thrive as they age make movement a daily non-negotiable.
⭐ FOSTER A LEARNER’S MENTALITY. Stay engaged! Challenge your mind by acquiring new skills and seeking out new experiences. These vibrant souls choose to expand when so many of their peers retract.
⭐LIMIT SCREEN TIME. Stay informed- but don’t let a 24-hour news cycle steal your peace and hijack your nervous system. Those who age well know when to turn down the noise, step away from screen- and step back into their real lives.
⭐STAY CONNECTED WITH COMMUNITY. Building new connections through shared interests is good for the soul. Whether it’s family or a “framily” knit together by common bonds, we weren’t meant to do it alone. Vibrant people chose the messiness - and the beauty- of community at every age.
⭐DO THE WORK. Ask yourself the hard questions. Release grudges. Don’t take yourself too seriously. Forgive yourself-and others. Seek support when needed. True vitality chooses the relationship over the need to be right.
⭐SERVE OTHERS REGULARLY. service pulls us out of ourselves and infuses our lives with purpose. Whether through an organization or simple act of kindness, bringing joy to others is the fast way to experience it- at any age.
⭐ CONSISTENCY-NOT PERFECTION. Those who thrive in their later years aren’t obsessed with doing everything right-they instead create a lifestyle through consistent habits. They’re the ones who simply kept showing up for themselves- and others.
Let’s Age Vibrantly, Together.
